September, 2026—Unlocking Hidden Treasures.

Sunday Service Message | 6th September 2026
Speaker: Rev. (Dr.) Umoren S. Akpan
Topic: Unlocking the Hidden Treasures Within You
Main Text: Judges 6:1–24

Introduction

Every believer carries something of immense value—God-given grace, gifts, abilities, ideas, and potentials designed to reveal His glory and make an impact in the world.

Yet, one of the greatest challenges a person can face is not the absence of potential, but the inability to discover, develop, and deploy what God has already placed within them.

The Bible reminds us:

1 Corinthians 2:9—”But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.”

God has deposited something precious and unique in every person—something that distinguishes them and equips them to fulfil their purpose. There is something you can do uniquely, effectively, and with grace. The challenge is discovering it, developing it, and putting it to work.

As we step into a new month, we are reminded that God is able to do new things in our lives. Therefore, may every hidden treasure, gift, idea, ability, and potential that God has placed within you be unlocked this month, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

We are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, and a people called to display God’s glory. We have been ordained to do exploits.

There are opportunities all around us, and our prayer should be that we will have the wisdom to recognize them and the courage to seize them.

Isaiah 45:3—”And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places…”

And because the power of God resides within us, we are never truly empty:

2 Corinthians 4:7—”But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.”

The treasure is there. The question is, will you discover it and unlock it?

Key Lessons for Unlocking the Hidden Treasures Within You

1. Recognize That There Is a Treasure Within You

You cannot unlock what you do not recognize.

The first step towards discovering your potential is acknowledging that God has placed something valuable inside you.

This is beautifully demonstrated in the story of Gideon.

When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he was hiding while threshing wheat because Israel was under oppression from the Midianites. Gideon saw himself as weak, insignificant, and incapable. But God saw something entirely different.

Judges 6:12—”And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, ‘The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.'”

Gideon did not see himself as a mighty man of valor. God did.

He considered himself the least in his family, from one of the weakest clans of Manasseh. But God saw in Gideon the deliverer Israel needed.

God sees potential where man sees weakness.

Sometimes, the greatest limitation standing between you and your potential is the picture you have of yourself.

You must begin to see yourself through the eyes of God.

2. Discover the Gift God Has Given You

God has given every person gifts, abilities, and grace. These gifts are not meant to remain hidden or dormant.

Paul admonished Timothy:

1 Timothy 4:14—”Neglect not the gift that is in thee…”

Never underestimate the grace of God upon your life.

A gift that is not developed remains limited. A talent that is not exercised becomes dormant.

Prayer is important. Prayer can open doors, but you must work and walk through those doors.

Therefore, make a conscious decision to develop yourself. Acquire knowledge. Attend trainings. Learn new skills. Upskill where necessary. Read. Ask questions. Practice. Improve.

Every man has his own uniqueness. Discover your uniqueness, develop it, and deploy it accordingly.

You are the author of your own life. Write your story. Own it. Walk in it.

Ask yourself sincerely:

  • What can I do naturally and effortlessly?
  • What am I passionate about?
  • What do people consistently recognize as my strength?
  • What ability has God placed within me that I have not fully developed?

Never measure your journey by another person’s journey. You are entirely different from the next person.

Your growth and progress require you to take responsibility for developing what God has entrusted to you.

3. Stop Neglecting Your Treasure

A treasure that is continually neglected can become dormant and eventually lose its usefulness.

The same is true of your gifts, ideas, talents, and visions.

An idea that is never acted upon eventually dies.

A dream that is never pursued remains only a dream.

A talent that is never developed cannot produce its full potential.

Therefore, make conscious efforts to put yourself in a position of advantage. Invest in yourself. Build your capacity. Improve your skills. Give your gifts room to grow.

Do not bury what God has entrusted to you.

4. Develop Yourself Through Diligence

Potential alone is not enough.

There are people who possess great gifts but never become great because they refuse to develop what they have.

God can deposit the seed, but you must cultivate it.

Diligence requires discipline, consistency, learning, practice, and commitment.

The person you become tomorrow will largely be determined by what you deliberately develop today.

Therefore, do not merely ask God for greater opportunities. Prepare yourself for the opportunities you are praying for.

5. Overcome the Fear That You Are Not Enough

One of the greatest enemies of potential is fear.

Sometimes, people know they have a gift but are afraid to use it because they feel inadequate.

This was part of Gideon’s struggle.

It is also reflected in the parable of the talents, where the servant who received one talent buried it because of fear.

Matthew 25:25—”And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth…”

Fear can make you bury what God intended you to multiply.

The Word of God also declares:

Habakkuk 1:11—”Then shall his mind change, and he shall pass over, and offend, imputing this his power unto his god.”

Your treasures are activated through faith. While human effort, discipline, and diligence are necessary, unlocking your full potential ultimately requires dependence on God and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

You must take the bold step.

You may not feel ready. You may not feel sufficient. But you must trust the God who put the treasure inside you.

How to Unlock the Hidden Treasures Within You

The message gives us five practical steps:

1. Seek God for Revelation

Ask God to reveal what He has placed inside you and show you how to use it.

Jeremiah 33:3—”Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”

There are dimensions of your potential you may not yet know. Seek God for revelation.

2. Stop Underestimating Yourself

Do not allow insecurity, past failures, people’s opinions, or your current circumstances to define your capacity.

Gideon saw weakness. God saw a mighty man of valor.

3. Develop Yourself Through Knowledge

Your gift needs capacity.

Learn. Read. Train. Practice. Improve.

Do not expect yesterday’s knowledge to carry you into tomorrow’s opportunities.

4. Be Diligent

Diligence separates potential from productivity.

Proverbs 22:29—”Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings…”

What God has placed within you deserves your discipline and commitment.

5. Take a Step of Faith and Overcome Your Fears

You will never discover the full extent of your capacity while continually standing on the sidelines; you must step out.

The 3 Ds: The Key to Unlocking Your Treasure

The central charge from the message can be captured in three powerful words:

DISCOVER. DEVELOP. DEPLOY.

Discover what God has placed inside you.

Develop it through knowledge, discipline, diligence, prayer, and continuous improvement.

Deploy it by putting your gifts, talents, ideas, and abilities to work for God’s glory and the benefit of others.

It is not enough to know that you have a treasure. You must unlock it.

Conclusion

There is so much more inside you than you can ever imagine.

Do not allow fear to convince you that you are not enough. Do not allow insecurity to make you underestimate yourself. Do not allow neglect to bury your gifts, and do not allow undeveloped potential to become wasted potential.

The God who called Gideon a “mighty man of valour” while he was still hiding is the same God who sees beyond your present circumstances and recognizes what He has placed inside you.

This new month, may your eyes be opened to your God-given abilities. May dormant gifts come alive. May hidden ideas receive expression. May courage replace fear, diligence replace complacency, and faith replace self-doubt.

Discover what is within you.
Develop what God has given you.
Deploy it for His glory.

DISCOVER. DEVELOP. DEPLOY.

There is a treasure within you. Now, unlock it.
