WISDOM FOR A SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE AND RELATIONSHIP

Highlight Of Sunday’s Message
Date: 15th February, 2026
Minister: Pastor (Mrs.) Faith Umoren
Topic: Wisdom for a Successful Marriage and Relationship
Text: Ephesians 5:17–33

Introduction:
The foundation of wisdom is the fear of God. When you fear God, you position yourself to learn, to grow, and to receive divine direction.
Ephesians 5:17 – “Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.”
A successful marriage begins with understanding and aligning with the will of God.

What Is Marriage?
Marriage is the self-fulfillment of divine destiny and purpose. It is the second most important covenant in a person’s life.
Genesis 18:19 – “For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him…”

Marriage is a union of two visions coming together to form one great vision.
Amos 3:3 – “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”
For a marriage to succeed, both individuals must be moving in the same direction.

Marriage is a synergy of energy that guarantees destiny fulfillment.
Ecclesiastes 4:9 – “Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.”

Marriage is about sharing responsibilities, standing together, and winning together.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 – “And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him…”

Marriage is the practice of true love, giving your all and being fully committed. It is a bedrock of support and safety, where both partners work for each other’s good.
1 Samuel 25:24 – “And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be…”

Marriage facilitates victory.
Genesis 25:21 – “And Isaac intreated the Lord for his wife, because she was barren…”
In marriage, weaknesses are not exposed but covered and strengthened.

Marriage is God’s institution, the oldest of all institutions, and whatever God initiates is good and beautiful.

Marriage reflects the relationship between Christ and the Church.
Ephesians 5:25 – “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church…”
A wife’s submission is an act of obedience to God, and a husband must love, provide, and protect as Christ does for the Church.

Genesis 2:18 – “And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone…”
Revelation 19:9 – “Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb.”

Marriage is essential for family and destiny to emerge.
Luke 1:27 – “To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph…”
Genesis 2:21 – “And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam…”

Keys to a Successful Marriage

  1. Trust God to Lead You
Seek God for direction and counsel from those He has placed over you who are succeeding in marriage.
  2. Marry for Love, Value, and Respect
Do not marry for wealth, beauty, or outward appearance.
Genesis 24:67 – “And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent…”
  3. Understand Spiritual Leadership
A woman should marry a man who is spiritually ahead, as the man is the priest of the home.
  4. Practice Forgiveness
Marriage joins two imperfect people pursuing one vision. Do not expect perfection or attempt to change your spouse’s nature. Forgiveness must be continual.
  5. Be Committed to Your Spouse’s Fulfillment
Seek your partner’s growth and satisfaction.
Matthew 7:12 – “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them…”
  6. Maintain Trust at All Cost
Without trust, a relationship dies. Your spouse should trust you with life and resources.
  7. Create Joy Intentionally
    Joy sustains purpose in marriage.
    Proverbs 17:22 – “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine…”
Joel 1:12 – “The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth…”
Give easily. Forgive quickly. Keep joy alive.
  8. Marry Within Your Faith
Do not marry outside your faith. Unity in belief strengthens unity in purpose.
  9. Marry Someone You Can Listen To and Submit To
    Mutual respect strengthens love.
Ephesians 5:21 – “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.”
  10. Reject Abuse
There should be no room for physical, verbal, or emotional abuse in marriage.
  11. Practice Empathy
Put yourself in your partner’s shoes.
  12. Seek Understanding Before Reacting
    Understand intentions before judging actions.
Proverbs 18:14 – “The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity…”
  13. Spend Quality Time Together
Friendship, communication, and quality time ignite love and passion.

Final Exhortation:
Marriage is highly spiritual. It is a divine platform where great destinies are birthed. Therefore, do not neglect your home. Work on your marriage consistently, because anything not nurtured becomes inactive.

Be clear about what you want from marriage. Communicate openly. Accommodate each other’s weaknesses.

Above all, trust God to help you build a successful marriage.
When God is at the center, love becomes stronger, trust becomes deeper, joy becomes consistent, and purpose becomes fulfilled.
May every home become a place of peace, purpose, and destiny fulfillment in Jesus’ Name.
